We finally got a chance to give Sword Weirdos a try. I've been very excited about the rules, since they seem to scratch an itch for a easy-to-grasp fantasy skirmisher, with a bit of "grit" to character building. The rules seem to accomodate a large variety of character types, while looking solid and simple enough to tinker with myself. But thats in theory - We had to get the rules on the table to find out!
So for our first game two small groups around 55 pts per side squared off over a couple lumpy shags.
On my end, I took control of Boss Bloodaxe, his favourite mate "Skullbasha" and the two grots they hadn't crumped enough to get away.

| My first move was to advance a spear goblin up the board, thinking his Set manouvre would keep him somewhat "safe" (However...) |
On the other side of the board I faced a Dark Elf and her undead minions. Two skeletons and a powerful but slow Mummy, brandishing a scary huge mace.
The Dark Elf was a spellblade knowing a couple of cool spells, so we jostled back and forth a bit, trying to draw out each others "big" activations (my bow gobbo vs. the dark elf/mummy combo). While I did get to lob an ineffective arrow down the table first...
The use of teleport on the mummy allowed my opponent to overcome both the mummys slow speed, and the goblins Set spear. After downing and staggering the goblin with the first strike, my opponent then used the mummys "bellringer" manouvre to bludgeon the stunned goblin to death at the start of the next turn. Gruesome!
It then came down to a bit of a scrum in the middle, as the rest of the fighters caught up and got stuck in.

The gangs clash, trading blows over the bloodslicked ground. |
I even threw my archer into the fray, hoping to finagle an outnumbering modifier. Unfortunately, Skullbasha got Staggered quickly and couldn't seem to pull himself together. Boss Bloodaxe entered the fray, hoping to maky use of his Sweeping axe but he couldn't really find his mark.

| A flanking skeleton then charged Bloodaxe, stacking an impressive amount of modifiers to decapitate the orc in one fell swoop. |
While my archer did manage to break away and score a minor hit on the dark elf, they easily shrugged off the damage and we decided to call the game there. We had reached turn 4 anyways (where you usually dice off to see if the game ends) and my single goblin did not stand much chance with the mummy rapidly closing in.

| A spitefull snipe at the dark elf. Skullbasha got mauled by a Bellringer soon after, and the goblin decided enough was enough and headed home. |
Despite my trashing, the game was a great deal of fun. I can see how the game definitely needs a scenario of some kind to avoid every game just turning into a scrum in the middle type affair. Likewise, going up to the recommended starting point of 75pts I feel will definitely add a bit more back and forth.
I specifically kepts the gangs simple, repeating a lot of classes and weapons, so we could focus on learning the rules. Next time, we'll try some more exotic characters!
